Three hundred reasons for visiting Uganda are the number of endangered mountain gorillas living in the mists of the rainforest clad volcanoes of Bwindi and Mgahinga. A thousand more reasons are the number of bird species in Uganda twice as many as in most other African safari countries. And then there's the scenery.....the towering "Mountains of the Moon", lakes Edward, Albert and Victoria lying in the Great Rift Valley, and the Blue Nile which cascades over Murchison Falls.
Accommodation we use.
Uganda has a wide range of standards when it comes to places to stay - from five star hotels and first class luxury Lodges and Camps, to rustic bush camps, guesthouses and campsites.
However, different in style and location these facilities might have, there is something common to all of them and that is the hospitality and the welcome that a visitor to Uganda is accorded. A smile and warm welcome runs deep in Uganda's culture and every visitor to Uganda is entitled to that experience.
Accommodation is not that expensive in Uganda. You can get a reasonably good hotel room for as little as $ 35 a night. Whatever your budget and taste, you will be able to find something that suits you, from the 5-star Sheraton in the centre of Kampala to Speke Resort Munyonyo on the shores of Lake Victoria and Hotel International on Muyenga Hill overlooking the city.
There are hotels of varying standards in all the major towns.
All the National Parks and major tourist sites have either luxury lodges, hotels or camping sites or all. Camping charges can be as low as $5 a night. You can bring your own tent, buy or hire one in Kampala.
Uganda accommodation is based around the main tourist areas in the south and west of the country, while the capital - Kampala - has some large and luxurious hotels of international standards.
It would be unfair to compare Uganda's accommodation to the decadent lodges of South Africa and Botswana, but you certainly won't want for comfort and good food in stunning settings.
What's more, most of the lodges in Uganda are smaller and more intimate than those in the rest of East Africa and the principles of ecotourism are taken very seriously by many of the Uganda accommodation operators.
Most of our Steady Safari tours are predominantly Lodging tours, and Lodging gives flexibility that's hard to beat. Accommodation is normally in class safari chic lodges, which are designed to bring the most of home confort to a visitor.
Camping
At the beginning of a tour you and your tent buddy will be allocated a tent that you keep throughout the duration of the trip and it's up to you to look after it and keep clean. If you've never pitched a tent before then the tour leader will give you a demonstration and by the end of the tour you'll be a dab hand at quickly putting it up and down, even in the dark.
Occasionally you'll help out and pitch the cook's tent if they are busy preparing meals. Expect a range of surfaces to pitch your tent on from stony, gravel deserts, sun-baked hard earth, to springy green grass and luxurious soft beach sand. On most tours, you'll need to bring your own sleeping mat (this will be advised when booking) and sleeping bag. See gear for information on the types available.
Most nights you stay in campsites that can now be found the length and breadth of Africa thanks to the popularity of Steady Safaris. Some have extensive facilities whilst others are very basic, but looking around you at how people live, Africa is not the place to complain if you don't get a hot shower every night.
The more established places have shared ablution blocks, taps, fire pits, rubbish bins, grassy or sandy camping sites, bars, restaurants, and sometimes shops. Others have nothing more than a long drop loo – not knowing where you are going to sleep each night is all part of the steady safaris. Campsites in East Africa tend to be much more primitive than those in southern Africa. Travelling north to south facilities steadily get better, whilst travelling south to north you will suddenly wonder where the swimming pool has gone.
